Handicrafts

Carpets

The traditional Turkish carpet: painstakingly handwoven on the loom from yarns colored with natural root dyes. You can watch the traditional making of natural Turkish carpets from pure wool. While you sip your tea you can listen to the sound of weaving coming from the looms, and if you like, buy one of these carpets with their colorful motifs and enrich your home with traditional Turkish art.

Ceramics

Archaeological finds from Ephesus prove the deep-rooted history of ceramic art in these lands. Ceramic objects and pottery kilns show the importance of this craft in the art of Ephesus. The ceramic workshops still operating in Selçuk continue to reveal the aesthetic character of fire-baked clay. Patterns brought to life by hand with colorful natural paints are fired in kilns and made to last forever. Ceramics stands out as one of the crafts that visitors to the region find most fascinating.

Needle Lace

Known worldwide as “Turkish lace,” needle lace (iğne oyası) is made mainly from silk, as well as cotton and synthetic threads. A three-dimensional form of needlework, oya differs from other kinds of lacework above all in being used for decoration. Besides adorning women’s headscarves, oya is also used in men’s clothing.
